Colouring page depicting a cake from the King of Cima
The Portuguese tradition of "Bolo Rei de Cima" or "Cake of the King of Cima" is a regional variation of the famous "Bolo Rei" that is commonly consumed during the festive season, particularly at Christmas and New Year. This specific version of the cake is typical of the Upper Trás-os-Montes region in north-eastern Portugal.
The traditional "Bolo Rei" is a crown-shaped cake, rich in dried fruits and candied peel, often enhanced with nuts and sometimes decorated with icing sugar or candied fruit on top. The dough is similar to sweet bread and may include ingredients such as port wine.
Tradition holds that the "Bolo Rei" contains a small gift (often a small bean) and sometimes a dried bean hidden inside. The person who finds the bean is said to have good luck for the coming year and may be crowned the "king" or "queen" of the day. The bean typically means that you must buy the "Bolo Rei" the following year.
