The coat of arms consists of a white shield with five small blue shields in the shape of a cross, representing the five Moorish kings defeated by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques. Surrounding these small shields are seven golden castles, symbolising the fortresses built to protect the kingdom. The armillary sphere that encircles the coat of arms represents the Age of Discoveries during which Portuguese explorers sailed to new lands.
The flag is made up of two vertical bands: green symbolises hope and red represents the blood shed by those who defended Portugal.
